HS BASKETBALL REPORT: Geneva boys knock off unbeaten Lyons after wild fourth quarter; Waterloo girls lose in triple OT

When the Wayne-Finger Lakes high school basketball schedule was released, the Lyons-Geneva boys matchup immediately stood out as one of the premier games of the season. On Monday night, the highly anticipated showdown delivered.

Both teams struggled to find their rhythm early, but the pace quickly picked up as the Lions and Panthers began trading leads throughout the first half. Geneva was able to seize a bit of momentum late, taking a slim two-point advantage into the locker room.

The Panthers came out strong after halftime, outscoring Lyons 19-11 in the third quarter to open up a 10-point cushion heading into the final eight minutes. Geneva later pushed the lead to as many as 14, but the Lions refused to go away. Lyons mounted a late surge, trimming the deficit to single digits before Jamire Johnson tied the game at 65 with 41 seconds remaining on a layup. Johnson was fouled on the play but missed the potential go-ahead free throw.

Moments later, Andrew Green was fouled while attempting a three-pointer with 24 seconds left. He calmly converted two of three free throws to put the Panthers back in front. That proved to be enough, as Geneva held on down the stretch despite Prodigy Irving missing a pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining.

Lyons had one final chance, but Kaywon Butler’s off-balance three at the buzzer came up short. The Panthers bounced back from their first loss of the season to Canandaigua, while handing the Lions their first defeat of the year.

Meanwhile, several other games were played across the region, including a wild triple-overtime matchup at Livonia High School that saw the Waterloo girls fall just short against Our Lady of Mercy.
