Energy costs spark fight at New York Capitol

With utility bills soaring and over a million New Yorkers in debt, state lawmakers are split on how to respond — either delay green energy mandates or push harder on clean power, according to the Times Union.

Some Democrats want to cap utility profits and return excess earnings to customers. Others are targeting grid upgrades and boosting small-scale solar to cut costs. Meanwhile, Republicans are pushing to delay emissions mandates and electric school bus rules, citing affordability.

Gov. Hochul has sent mixed signals, backing some ratepayer relief while vetoing bills that would create a utility watchdog office.
