Preliminary data from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee shows 681 people died in crashes during the first 10 months of 2025, down from 766 over the same period last year. Motorcycle deaths also declined, falling from 157 to 134.

Upstate New York saw a 14% drop in traffic fatalities, while Long Island recorded a slight increase driven by more pedestrian and bicyclist deaths. DMV Commissioner Mark Schroeder credited safety campaigns and targeted enforcement but warned that continued efforts remain critical.
