State seeks new park police recruits

New York State is looking for a new class of park police officers as record numbers of visitors continue to flock to state parks and historic sites.

The Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced it is accepting applications for park police candidates through Feb. 18. Updated guidelines and expanded eligibility are aimed at opening the door to more applicants.

“With updated guidelines and requirements, we are proud to welcome a new generation of Park Police candidates,” Acting State Parks Commissioner Kathy Moser said. “As visitation continues to grow, we are seeking dedicated individuals who are committed to public service and to ensuring our parks remain safe and welcoming for everyone.”

Expanded age and experience requirements

The new guidelines raise the maximum age limit significantly. Candidates must be at least 20 years old at the time of hire and must not have passed their 43rd birthday by Oct. 1, 2026. The previous cutoff age was 35.

Applicants must also meet education or experience requirements, which can include 60 college semester credit hours completed by June 30, 2026, military service, or municipal police training.

Training and career path

State Parks says new recruits receive both classroom instruction and hands-on field training. Coursework covers criminal procedure, penal law, vehicle and traffic law, park and recreation law, and criminal investigations.

Training also includes firearms, first response, emergency vehicle operation, snowmobile and ATV use, and other law enforcement skills tailored to park environments.

“Park Police are relied upon to help people in need during extreme events across various park environments,” Park Police Chief Michael Daddona said. “This is a challenging and rewarding career.”

Protecting parks statewide

Park Police officers patrol state parks and historic sites across New York, helping ensure safe and enjoyable experiences for residents and visitors. The agency describes its mission as P.R.I.D.E.: Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence.

More information about the application process, agility test, and written exam is available on the Park Police website.
