Wooden “timeout” boxes in elementary classrooms sparked outrage and swift action in a rural North Country school district, according to the Times Union. Salmon River Central School District leaders placed several top officials on leave after parents learned children may have been confined inside the boxes.
The board reassigned the superintendent to home duties and put other administrators and staff on administrative leave. State and local authorities launched investigations, and the district hired a private law firm to review what happened.
Parents packed a tense school board meeting, linking the boxes to trauma in the largely Native American community. The district shifted to remote learning for two days and says it will cooperate fully as investigations continue.
