Marijuana tracking law faces court fight

A Fulton County cannabis processor is asking a judge to halt New York’s new marijuana tracking system, arguing regulators went too far, according to the Times Union.

The lawsuit challenges the state’s mandatory “seed-to-sale” program that began this week, which requires cannabis businesses to tag individual products using a system run by Florida-based company Metrc. The company claims the rules sharply raise costs and were imposed without proper legislative authority.

A judge temporarily blocked enforcement against the plaintiff and scheduled arguments for Friday, leaving open the possibility of a broader pause. State officials say the system is critical to stopping illegal cannabis from flooding New York’s legal market.
