Canandaigua City Council to vote on budget, rates, and major initiatives tonight

Canandaigua City Council members are set to take action on a wide-ranging agenda when they meet tonight at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at the Hurley Building. The meeting will also be available by Zoom and live-streamed on Finger Lakes TV.

One of the most significant items before the council is adoption of the City of Canandaigua’s 2026 budget. Councilors are scheduled to vote on resolutions approving the budget, setting the 2026 tax levy, authorizing the collection of county taxes, and approving the 2026 Business Improvement District budget and levy.

The council will also consider changes that affect residents’ utility costs. Proposed resolutions would establish new water rates for 2026 and formally adopt a local law setting sewer rents, including updated minimum quarterly charges.

Several appointments are on the agenda, including new or renewed terms for the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and the Board of Assessment Review. Council members are also expected to appoint Kate Ott, RN, MPH, as the city’s local health officer through the end of 2029 as part of a shared services agreement with Ontario County.

Councilors will also consider a resolution honoring outgoing Mayor Bob Palumbo for his years of service to the city, marking a formal recognition of his tenure on City Council and as mayor.

Infrastructure and environmental projects are another major focus. The council is expected to accept a donation of nearly nine acres of land on North Street to support flood mitigation along Sucker Brook. Additional resolutions would award engineering contracts related to climate adaptation planning and watershed improvements.

Several resolutions seek to position the city for future funding. These include requests urging the state to increase aid for local governments, boost reimbursement rates for arterial road maintenance, and grant home rule authority to allow Canandaigua to raise its hotel and motel occupancy tax cap.

The agenda also includes awarding contracts for water treatment and wastewater chemicals to ensure uninterrupted operation of city facilities, as well as authorizing contracts with outside agencies funded in the 2026 budget.

The meeting will conclude with an executive session to discuss collective bargaining and an employment matter.
