As runners and spectators gather today for the It’s a Wonderful Life 5K, Seneca Falls police are reminding the community that safety and responsibility are key to keeping the popular event family-friendly.
In a message released ahead of the race, Seneca Falls Police Chief Timothy Snyder emphasized that state and local laws will be enforced throughout the event, particularly when it comes to alcohol.
“It is illegal to serve or provide alcohol to minors,” Snyder said, adding that any individual or business found violating the law will be charged. He also reminded residents and visitors that the town’s open container law remains in effect during the 5K and throughout the weekend’s festivities.
“This 5K is meant to be a fun, family-friendly community event,” Snyder said. “I am asking everyone to please be responsible, follow the law, and help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants and spectators.”
Traffic and parking impacts
The 5K is part of the larger It’s a Wonderful Life weekend, which transforms downtown Seneca Falls into “Bedford Falls” for thousands of visitors. Police are urging drivers to plan extra travel time, especially in and around downtown.
Several streets will have no parking today to accommodate the race and related events, including State Street, the north side of Chapel Street, the north side of Fall Street, and Bridge Street between West Bayard and Bridge. The Cowing Street Municipal Lot will also close after the parade.
Police officials say these measures are designed to keep runners, pedestrians, and spectators safe while allowing the event to run smoothly.
A community tradition
The It’s a Wonderful Life 5K is one of the weekend’s signature events, drawing locals and visitors alike to celebrate Seneca Falls’ connection to the classic holiday film. Police are asking everyone to cooperate with officers, follow posted signs, and respect local laws so the event remains enjoyable for all.
