Blakeman enters governor’s race, takes on Stefanik

Bruce Blakeman launched his campaign for New York governor Tuesday, setting up a high-profile GOP primary against U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, according to the Times Union.

Blakeman, the Nassau County Executive, pitched himself as a moderate Republican who can win statewide — pointing to his recent reelection in a politically mixed county. Stefanik’s team fired back, blasting Blakeman as unelectable and anti–Second Amendment.

The race could divide New York Republicans ahead of a June primary. Both candidates are close to Donald Trump, but he hasn’t endorsed either yet. Gov. Kathy Hochul’s team is already using their Trump ties to rally Democrats.
