The Buffalo Bills added a major name to their secondary on Wednesday, claiming veteran cornerback Darius Slay off waivers, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Slay hit the wire after he and the Pittsburgh Steelers agreed to move on, following his unexpected status as a healthy scratch in Pittsburgh’s loss to Buffalo last Sunday.
Slay, 34, signed with the Steelers in the offseason after a successful five-year stretch with the Philadelphia Eagles. During his time in Philadelphia, he played in 74 regular-season games, recorded nine interceptions, and was part of the team that captured last season’s Super Bowl title. His stint in Pittsburgh, however, was brief. Through 10 games this season, he totaled 36 tackles, including one for loss, and three passes defensed.
The six-time Pro Bowler now joins a Buffalo cornerback group anchored by Christian Benford, Tre’Davious White, and Taron Johnson, along with rookie first-rounder Maxwell Hairston. His arrival gives the Bills an experienced option as they continue to navigate injuries and seek added stability in the defensive backfield.
Buffalo becomes the fourth stop of Slay’s NFL career, which began in Detroit, where he spent seven seasons with the Lions before moving on to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
