Cornell funds AI projects to fight climate change

Cornell is backing eight new research teams to tackle climate issues using—and improving—AI, according to the Cornell Chronicle.

The university’s 2030 Project, AI Initiative, and Atkinson Center awarded “Fast Grants” of up to $25,000 to projects ranging from robotic eDNA sampling to forest monitoring in Cambodia. One team is even developing “EcoGPT,” a slower AI that dramatically cuts energy use.

The grants aim to reduce AI’s growing carbon footprint while using the tech to boost climate solutions. Cornell researchers warn that by 2030, AI could emit up to 44 million metric tons of CO₂ without changes.
