Bridge closure on Route 34 begins Monday in Cayuga County

Drivers in Cayuga County should plan for major detours starting Monday as a long-term bridge project gets underway.

The New York State Department of Transportation says State Route 34 will close at the bridge over the Erie/Barge Canal and Seneca River in the towns of Brutus and Cato. The closure begins at 7:00 a.m. on December 1 and is expected to last through November 2026.

The closure is part of a full bridge replacement project. Northbound traffic will be detoured west on Route 31, north on Route 38, and east on Route 370 to reconnect with Route 34. Southbound traffic will follow the reverse route: west on Route 370, south on Route 38, and east on Route 31.

Drivers are advised to expect delays and allow for extra travel time. Officials also reminded the public that speeding fines are doubled in work zones, and multiple violations can result in a license suspension.
