William Smith hockey fell 5-1 to Bowdoin on Saturday night in the semifinals of the Codfish Bowl at UMass Boston’s Edward T. Barry Ice Rink. Both programs entered the matchup receiving votes in the national rankings. With the loss, the Herons dropped to 5-2-0, while the Polar Bears improved to 4-2-0.
First-year forward Lilly Relyea provided William Smith’s lone goal, the first of her collegiate career. Goaltender Mia Iwicki turned in another heavy workload, stopping 46 shots in a full 60-minute effort, marking her second performance of 40-plus saves in her last three starts.
Bowdoin’s attack was paced by Meghan Britt, who scored twice, while Luna Lu and Bella Mele each recorded two points. The Polar Bears controlled possession for long stretches and finished with a 51–15 advantage in shots on goal. They also earned all three power-play opportunities, though the Herons’ penalty kill held firm.
Bowdoin struck early in the first period and carried a 1-0 lead into intermission. William Smith drew even late in the second when Relyea cleaned up a rebound at the left post. The tie was short-lived, however, as Bowdoin responded with two goals less than a minute apart to take a 3-1 lead into the third.
The Polar Bears added two more in the final frame—one from Bea Palmer and another from Britt—to put the game out of reach.
William Smith returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. against host UMass Boston in the tournament’s consolation game.
