Cornell men’s basketball drills record 24 three-pointers in rout of Misericordia

Cornell men’s basketball delivered a record-setting performance on Wednesday afternoon, rolling past Misericordia 114-70 at Newman Arena for its fourth straight win. The Big Red improved to 4-2 after breaking program single-game records for made and attempted three-pointers, knocking down 24 threes on 56 attempts as 12 different players connected from deep.

DJ Nix and Gio Panzini led the effort with 16 points each. Nix was perfect from the floor, including four makes from long range, while Panzini went 6-for-6 in 13 minutes off the bench. Senior Jake Fiegen added 14 points with four threes, and Cooper Noard chipped in 13 points and five rebounds. DaMaryon Fishburn posted 12 points, nine boards and four threes, nearly securing a double-double. All 16 Cornell players scored, and the team shot 53 percent overall, 91 percent at the free-throw line and finished with 35 assists, the third-highest total in school history.

Cornell broke the game open early, burying 16 threes in the first half and shooting 65 percent to build a 68-34 halftime lead. The margin never dipped below 30 after intermission as the Big Red controlled the boards 48-28, forced 21 turnovers and piled up 74 bench points. Mateen Rafiq and Anthony Nimani led the ball movement with seven and three assists, respectively, while Kaspar Sepp contributed eight rebounds and four assists.

Misericordia was led by Ace Varella’s 10 points but struggled to match Cornell’s pace and perimeter onslaught.
