Court upholds 15-year sentence in Cayuga County robbery

A state appeals court has upheld the conviction and maximum sentence for Trent Goodrich, a Cayuga County man who pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery last year.

Goodrich admitted to joining three other people in a strong-arm robbery of a man near Moravia on April 22, 2022. He pleaded guilty on April 14, 2023, in Cayuga County Court.

At sentencing in December, the judge gave Goodrich the maximum term — 15 years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision. The sentence factored in multiple new arrests Goodrich had picked up since the original crime.

Goodrich appealed, arguing the sentence was too harsh. But on November 21, the Appellate Division, Fourth Department rejected that claim and affirmed the original punishment.

Chief Assistant District Attorney Christopher T. Valdina prosecuted the case and handled the appeal for the DA’s office.
