Inmate assaults staff at Wallkill facility

Multiple staff members were assaulted during two incidents at Wallkill Correctional Facility, officials said.

The incidents involved an inmate throwing urine at staff and another inmate assaulting officers and a nurse during a medical response.

On Feb. 27, an inmate threw urine through a cell door, striking an officer and a National Guardsman. Minutes later, the inmate repeated the act, hitting a second officer. All three were treated for exposure.

The inmate, 47, is serving a 23-year sentence for robbery and was later transferred to Shawangunk Correctional Facility and placed in a special housing unit.

In a separate incident on March 4, an officer found an inmate unresponsive but breathing during rounds. As staff attempted to transport him, the inmate became combative, struck at officers and bit one officer on the forearm, breaking the skin.

Authorities said the inmate also elbowed a nurse and spit on staff before being brought under control. The injured officer received medical treatment, while another officer sustained wrist and hand injuries but remained on duty.

The inmate involved in the second incident was also transferred to a special housing unit.
