Cornell women’s hockey uses three-goal first period to down RPI

No. 4 Cornell women’s hockey closed out its weekend trip with a 4-1 win over RPI on Saturday afternoon at Houston Field House, improving to 9-2, while the Engineers slipped to 4-13.

The Big Red controlled the action early, striking five minutes in when Abby Thibodeau ended the team’s stretch without a 5-on-5 goal. A major penalty assessed to RPI midway through the first period opened the door for Cornell to pull away. Karel Prefontaine converted on the power play, and Georgia Schiff redirected in another goal less than a minute later to give Cornell a 3-0 cushion through one period.

Cornell continued to dictate play, adding a fourth goal in the third when Alyssa Regalado buried a chance to extend the lead. RPI broke up the shutout minutes later as Mia Montanari scored on a breakaway, but it was the only puck the Engineers managed to slip past Annelies Bergmann, who finished with 16 saves for her ninth win.

Cornell generated consistent pressure throughout the afternoon, outshooting RPI and receiving assists from seven different skaters, including multiple helpers from Nora Curtis. RPI’s Maelee Ambrass stopped 30 shots in the loss.

Box Score

The Big Red secured a split in their Albany-area weekend and now turn their attention to a midweek matchup. Cornell returns to the ice Tuesday, November 25, for a nonconference trip to Syracuse, with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
