Fatal crash on Route 73 in Keene under investigation

New York State Police are investigating a deadly crash involving a tractor-trailer and two passenger vehicles that occurred Monday afternoon on Route 73 in the town of Keene.

Troopers say the collision happened around 3:52 p.m. on November 17, when a white 2024 Freightliner tractor-trailer, driven by 35-year-old Samuel L. Stoner of Clifton Park, lost control on the slushy roadway. The truck jackknifed into the westbound lane.

A westbound 2022 Ford Escape, driven by Tracy L. Mauler, 57, of Saranac Lake, was unable to avoid the oncoming trailer. The two vehicles collided, and Mauler was unresponsive at the scene. She was pronounced dead by the Essex County Coroner.

Her passenger, 84-year-old Beverly A. Pickreign, also of Saranac Lake, was critically injured. She was taken to Adirondack Medical Center and later transferred to UVM Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.

A third vehicle, a 2018 Toyota Scion traveling behind the Ford Escape, tried to avoid the crash but struck the trailer and slid off the road, hitting a rock wall. The occupants of that vehicle, along with Stoner, were not injured.

Local fire and rescue teams responded to assist all involved. State Police say the investigation is ongoing.
