Cornell men’s hockey surges past Yale after lengthy delay

No. 20 Cornell men’s hockey overcame a lengthy ice-related delay and powered past Yale, earning a 5-2 victory and a weekend sweep at Lynah Rink. The matchup stretched more than three hours after the second intermission was extended by over an hour due to persistent ice issues, but the Red maintained control when play finally resumed.

After a scoreless first period, the game opened up in the middle frame with five combined goals. Ryan Walsh broke the deadlock on a power play early in the second, and freshman Reegan Hiscock doubled the lead by burying a rebound. Yale responded quickly to cut the margin to one, but Cornell surged again with two more goals late in the period, one from Nick DeSantis and another from Walsh, who capitalized on a loose puck near the post to make it 4-1 heading into the long stoppage.

Yale trimmed the deficit early in the third following a turnover that created a two-on-one opportunity, but Cornell’s penalty kill stood firm the rest of the way. Freshman Caton Ryan sealed the win by redirecting a shot for his third goal of the weekend.

Cornell finished the night perfect on the penalty kill and scored once on the power play. Freshman goaltender Alexis Cournoyer made 27 saves to secure the sweep.

Box Score

With the win, Cornell completes its first home weekend with six conference points and returns to action next week against Union and RPI at Lynah Rink.
