New York rolls out nation-leading AI safety laws

New York has enacted two new AI laws and launched a training program to keep artificial intelligence safe and ethical, RochesterFirst reports. The state now requires AI companion apps to detect signs of self-harm and direct users to crisis services. Operators must also clearly warn users they’re interacting with a bot.

A second law, the Algorithmic Pricing Disclosure Act, forces companies to disclose when prices are set using personal data — like income or location — through AI. Violators face $1,000 fines per offense.

The state court system also issued strict AI rules for judges and staff, banning most personal data from AI tools and requiring human review of any AI-generated content.
