Audit: NY wrongly paid $10M in Medicaid funds

New York’s Health Department let millions in improper Medicaid payments slip through due to poor oversight and billing errors, according to a state audit reported by the Times Union.

From 2020 to 2024, nearly 70,000 claims triggered $10.2 million in overpayments, with every sampled case showing billing issues. Some stemmed from a Medicare Advantage coding error; others lacked basic documentation.

The department is now fixing its billing system and trying to recover funds. Auditors say the findings highlight the need for stronger claim reviews, especially as federal cuts to Medicaid loom.
