Passenger dies on Carnival cruise ship, FBI launches investigation

The FBI has launched an investigation into the suspicious death of a passenger aboard the Carnival Horizon, a cruise ship that returned to Miami on Friday, November 8.

Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the death and stated the incident occurred during the voyage, prompting immediate involvement from federal authorities. The FBI is leading the investigation and has released no further details.

What we know so far

  • The death occurred onboard during the voyage
  • Carnival Horizon returned to port earlier than scheduled to cooperate with authorities
  • The FBI’s Miami field office is handling the case
  • No cause of death or identity has been released
  • Carnival says it is supporting the family of the deceased passenger

“Since this is an ongoing matter under the jurisdiction of law enforcement, it is up to the FBI’s Miami public affairs office to provide further details,” Carnival said in a statement.

FBI Special Agent Willie Creech also declined to share more, citing the active status of the case.

Is foul play suspected?

Neither the cruise line nor the FBI has confirmed whether the death is considered criminal. However, FBI involvement in cruise ship deaths typically signals possible foul play, especially when the death occurs in international waters.

Under U.S. law, the FBI has jurisdiction over suspicious deaths on cruise ships involving American citizens or vessels that dock at U.S. ports.

What is the Carnival Horizon?

The Carnival Horizon is one of Carnival Cruise Line’s largest vessels, capable of carrying over 3,900 passengers. It regularly sails to the Caribbean and other destinations from its home port in Miami.

Cruise ship deaths are rare but not unheard of. When they do occur, law enforcement agencies—often with limited access to the scene—face challenges in preserving evidence and interviewing potential witnesses before disembarkation.
