A consequential legislative agenda awaits Yates County lawmakers when they meet next week in Penn Yan.
The Legislature is set to hold a public hearing and vote on Local Law 5-25, which would formally opt the county out of New York’s new mandate to register short-term rental units. The meeting begins at 1 p.m. and will be held in-person and via Zoom.
If passed, the law would exempt Yates from creating a registration system required under Section 447-C of the New York Real Property Law. Lawmakers introduced the measure in October.
The November 10 meeting also includes a series of resolutions tied to public safety, education, tourism funding, and infrastructure. Among them:
- A five-year software contract with RAPIDSOS to modernize 911 emergency data sharing.
- A lease renewal for the South Hill communications tower in Middlesex.
- A new inmate transportation agreement with the Penn Yan Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
- A Memorandum of Understanding between the Probation Department and Dundee Central School to improve youth services.
The Legislature will also vote on more than $400,000 in budget transfers, including allocations for rabies control, hotel promotions, and aid to the Veterans Department. They’ll also consider renewing internet services with Empire Access and approving a contract extension for the Penn Yan Youth Lacrosse storage facility.
Tourism funding on the table
Lawmakers are expected to approve nearly $27,000 in tourism grants through the county’s Tourism Advisory Committee (TAC). The funding supports local groups like the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, Dundee Area Merchants, and the New York Wine & Grape Foundation.
They’ll also reappoint several TAC members, including Derek Stork of Stork Insurance and Nicole Folts of Vineyard View Winery.
