Flood project near completion at Happiness House in Canandaigua

A major flood control and water quality project at Happiness House in Canandaigua is nearly complete, more than two years after flash flooding caused widespread damage across Ontario County.

The $200,000 effort — a partnership between the Town of Canandaigua, the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Council, and Happiness House — includes a new 2.5-acre flood basin and drainage upgrades designed to capture and filter stormwater before it reaches Sucker Brook and Canandaigua Lake.

“This project is about turning that moment into long-term progress,” said Town Supervisor Jared Simpson. “We’re building greater protection for residents, businesses, and our lake.”

About 90% of the work was completed by the Town Highway Department with help from nearby towns. The project is fully funded by FEMA, and the town is being reimbursed for all labor and equipment — a win for both the community and taxpayers.

Watershed Program Manager Kevin Olvany praised the team effort: “We’ve strengthened resilience for Happiness House and for all of Canandaigua.”

The site still needs final grading and grass growth, but officials say the major work is done. A large boulder uncovered during construction was left in place — now a permanent reminder of the site’s natural landscape.
