Walworth board delays budget vote, sets new review meetings

The Walworth Town Board met for a special session on October 26, focusing on the town’s 2026 preliminary budget, public hearing scheduling, and upcoming work sessions.

New deputy clerk appointed

Town Clerk Nadine Settler announced the hiring of Valen Martin Dale Fisher as deputy town clerk, with a start date of October 30, 2025. The appointment followed several interviews with qualified candidates.

Public hearings rescheduled for proper notice

The board voted to reschedule two public hearings to ensure adequate newspaper notification.

  • One relates to Local Law No. 4 of 2025, revising provisions of Chapter 139 of the town code. The hearing will now be held October 31 at 4 p.m.
  • The second concerns the Walworth Sewer District’s 2025 special assessment roll, scheduled for November 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Budget adjustments and discussion

Accountant Christine VanLare presented a detailed summary of changes stemming from prior budget workshops. Adjustments included corrections to healthcare and workers’ compensation costs, mortgage tax revenue updates, and minor line-item revisions.

Mortgage tax revenue projections were increased by $30,000, offsetting some of the general fund’s tax levy. The overall change resulted in a net increase of roughly $77,000 to the tax levy. Sewer repair appropriations were slightly reduced, with use of fund balance covering financial consulting costs.

Budget timeline and special meetings

Board members agreed to delay adoption of the preliminary budget to allow for additional review. To stay on schedule before the November 20 state deadline, they scheduled a series of Monday evening work sessions at 6 p.m. on October 27, November 3, 10, and 17. The public hearing for the 2026 preliminary budget will be held November 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Executive session

The board entered a brief executive session to discuss a personnel matter. No action was taken afterward.

The meeting primarily focused on procedural and financial preparations for finalizing Walworth’s 2026 budget, appointing a new deputy clerk, and rescheduling key public hearings to comply with state notice requirements.
