Cornell football erases double-digit fourth-quarter deficit, takes down Brown in double overtime

Cornell football rallied from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Brown, 30-24, in double overtime on Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field, earning its first Ivy League win of the season. The victory marked the Big Red’s first overtime triumph since 2007, also against the Bears.

Trailing 17-6 early in the fourth, Cornell (2-4, 1-2 Ivy) mounted a dramatic comeback. Quarterback Garrett Bass-Sulpizio capped an eight-play drive with a 10-yard touchdown run, then hit John McAuliffe for the two-point conversion to pull within three. After forcing a turnover on downs, freshman kicker Jonathan Roost connected on a 25-yard field goal with 46 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

Brown (3-3, 0-3 Ivy) struck first in the extra period with James Murphy’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Ty Pezza, but Cornell quickly answered as Jordan Triplett’s two-yard run tied it at 24. In the second overtime, Triplett scored again, his third touchdown of the day, to give the Big Red the lead. Cornell’s defense then held firm, stopping Brown at the 5-yard line to seal the win.

Bass-Sulpizio threw for 346 yards and rushed for 70 more, while Triplett added 64 rushing yards. Ryan Matulevich led all Cornell receivers with 100 yards. Defensively, Braylon Howard recorded nine tackles and Johnny Williamson tallied a sack and four tackles for loss.
