238 new State Troopers graduate from NYSP Academy, boosting statewide ranks

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the graduation of 238 new State Troopers from the 217th session of the New York State Police Basic School on Wednesday, marking a major boost to the state’s public safety ranks.

The ceremony, held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany, brings the total number of sworn NYSP members to 5,110.

“These Troopers represent the best of New York,” said Governor Hochul. “Public safety is my number one priority, and I commend these men and women for their commitment to protecting our communities.”

Top recruits recognized for excellence

Four graduates received special awards for outstanding performance during the academy:

  • Trooper Haley E. Yegorov (Brooklyn) earned the Academic Achievement Award with a 97.35% average.
  • Trooper Josue V. Garibay (Albany) received the Firearms Proficiency Award, earning a perfect 250/250 score.
  • Trooper Connor T. Hamilton (Rocky Point) earned the Physical Fitness Award, ranking first in agility tests.
  • Trooper Richard A. Lagano (Watertown) was chosen by his peers to receive the Student Representative Award.

The graduation also included a performance of the national anthem by Trooper Madison D. Sciera of Homer and a video showcasing the recruits’ 26-week training program.

Troopers deploy statewide

The new Troopers will report to duty on October 27, beginning a 10-week field training program. Graduates are assigned to Troops B, C, D, E, F, G, and K, covering every region of the state—from Long Island and the Hudson Valley to the Southern Tier and North Country.

Superintendent Steven G. James praised the class’s determination. “They’ve shown integrity and resilience, and I’m confident they’ll uphold the high standards of this agency.”
