A former NYPD officer and a Long Island woman are facing manslaughter charges after a deadly street race in West Islip killed 22-year-old Anna Wilson and injured three others.
The New York State Attorney General’s Office announced October 14 that former officer Stanley Cadet, 27, and Kayla Lopez, 28, were indicted and arraigned on a series of charges, including second-degree manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment, and speeding.
Allegations detail high-speed street race
According to the indictment, Cadet and Lopez were driving more than 100 miles per hour just after 2:20 a.m. on May 11, 2024, racing side-by-side through a red light on Union Boulevard.
Investigators say the two continued down the road for about half a mile until they collided near the Route 231 overpass. Lopez’s car then struck multiple telephone poles and flipped, ejecting Wilson, a passenger in her vehicle. Wilson was taken to a nearby hospital, where she died. Another passenger suffered serious injuries.
At the time of the crash, Cadet was off-duty and driving his personal vehicle.
Prosecutors pursue special investigation
Because the incident involved a police officer, the Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) took over the case under New York Executive Law Section 70-b. That law requires the AG’s office to investigate any case in which a police officer may have caused a person’s death, whether on or off duty.
Governor Kathy Hochul signed an executive order on August 8, 2025, appointing Attorney General Letitia James’ office as special prosecutor for the case.
Cadet and Lopez were released on supervised release following their arraignment before Judge Ambro in Suffolk County. They’re due back in court on November 17.
If convicted, they could each face up to 15 years in prison.
