A crash at the intersection of State Route 96 and Brewer Road in the Town of Waterloo left four people seriously injured and sent multiple emergency crews rushing to the scene, according to the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say the collision happened around 6:51 p.m. on September 19, when a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Andrew L. Kappesser, 33, of Waterloo, pulled into the intersection and failed to yield the right of way. His vehicle was struck by a 2016 Buick SUV, which was forced off the road and into a ditch.
The Buick was carrying four people, all of whom suffered serious injuries:
- Geraldine A. Sergeant, 81, of Clifton Springs (driver)
- Barbara J. Notebaert, 82, of Palmyra
- June N. Debaere, 90, of Ulysses
- Karen L. Early, 73, of Newark
Two victims were transported to Strong Memorial Hospital by ambulance, and the other two were flown there via Life Net helicopter. Kappesser was evaluated on scene and did not require hospitalization.
Both vehicles were heavily damaged and had to be towed. A New York State DOT road sign was also damaged in the crash.
Kappesser has been charged with failure to yield right of way and is scheduled to appear in Waterloo Town Court on October 15 at 5:00 p.m.
Responding agencies included the Waterloo Police Department, New York State Police, Waterloo, Junius, and Border City Fire Departments, North Seneca Ambulance, and Life Net.
