Environmentalists were drowned out 4-to-1 by industry lobbyists in a failed push to pass a packaging reduction bill, according to Times Union.
The Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act had Senate support but stalled in the Assembly, facing fierce opposition from major corporations like Amazon and Coca-Cola. The bill aimed to cut packaging by 30% over 12 years and fund local recycling with corporate fees.
Opponents spent nearly $10 million lobbying against it — more than six times what backers spent. Advocates say they’ll return in January, armed with new health and taxpayer-saving arguments.
