Recreational use is back on the table for Flint Creek in Ontario County.
State officials lifted a months-long advisory Wednesday after water tests showed the creek is safe for swimming, boating, and fishing.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Department of Health (DOH) issued the warning in late August after a fire at the Eco Operations facility in Gorham sent contaminated runoff into the waterway.
That advisory was precautionary, officials said, and today’s announcement follows extensive sampling and data collection showing water quality has significantly improved.
DEC is still working with local, state, and federal partners as the fire investigation continues. They’ve referred disposal of hazardous materials to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. There’s no sign of any impact to public drinking water.
Officials also reminded anglers to check the state’s fish consumption advice before eating what they catch. DOH’s website includes up-to-date safety info for waters across New York.
