The New York Yankees expected Max Fried to steady them in Game 2 of the American League Division Series. Instead, the ace was chased early in a stunning 13-7 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday at Rogers Centre.
Fried lasted just 3.1 innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits and two walks. Toronto broke through in the second when Daulton Varsho doubled and advanced on an Aaron Judge error before Ernie Clement crushed a first-pitch curveball for a two-run homer. The Blue Jays piled on in the third with three more runs, capped by another Varsho double and Clement’s RBI single.
Fried’s night unraveled further in the fourth. After allowing two baserunners, he handed the ball to rookie Will Warren, making his postseason debut. Warren immediately walked a batter to load the bases, then served up a grand slam to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., putting the Yankees in a massive 9-0 hole.
On the other side, 22-year-old Trey Yesavage silenced New York’s lineup. In just his fourth career start, the rookie right-hander carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and completely outshined the former All-Star opposite him. He struck out 11 batters over 5.1 hitless innings.
Cody Bellinger put the Yankees on the board in the sixth with a two-run blast. Aaron Judge started a five-run seventh with an RBI single. Bellinger also had a sacrifice fly, Ben Rice contributed a run-scoring double, and Giancarlo Stanton chipped in a two-run single.
Down 2-0 in the best-of-five series, the Yankees return to Yankee Stadium needing three straight wins to avoid elimination. Game 3 on Tuesday is slated for 8:08 p.m.
