Free drug take-back event set for Oct. 25 in Penn Yan

A drive-thru event at the Yates County Courthouse will give residents a chance to safely toss out old prescription meds — no questions asked.

Yates County Sheriff Frank Ryan is partnering again with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency for the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. Deputies will collect unwanted prescription drugs on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. behind the county courthouse at 415 Liberty Street in Penn Yan.

The event is designed to help people safely dispose of expired or unused meds — free and anonymously. It’s a “drive-thru” style drop-off with no paperwork or ID required.

“We must continually use all resources to combat the misuse of narcotics and stimulants,” said Sheriff Ryan. He called the effort an important way to prevent drug misuse and protect the environment from improper disposal, like flushing pills down the toilet.

More drop-off options available year-round

Can’t make it on the 25th? The sheriff’s office offers permanent drop-boxes at several local buildings:

  • Public Safety building in Penn Yan — open 24/7
  • Starkey Town Hall in Dundee — Monday to Friday
  • Rushville Village Office — Monday to Friday

These daily sites have already seen regular use, and the sheriff thanked residents for their continued support in properly getting rid of medications.

“The DEA is making a nationwide effort once again and the Sheriff’s Office is glad to partner with them,” Ryan said. “This is a great opportunity for those who accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of them.”
