EPA backs off broader PFAS water limits

The EPA will keep tough rules for two toxic “forever chemicals” in drinking water but is backing away from regulating four others, according to Spectrum News.

While PFOS and PFOA will still be treated as hazardous, the EPA is asking a federal court to dismiss safeguards for PFNA, PFHxS, PFBS, and HFPO-DA—chemicals also linked to serious health risks. Environmental groups in New York say the rollback puts millions at risk, especially with PFAS still found in 189 water systems statewide.

Advocates are now pressuring Gov. Hochul and lawmakers to adopt stricter state standards mirroring earlier federal protections.
