After more than three decades of service, Ontario County Sheriff’s Investigator Doug Smith is hanging up his badge.

Smith officially retired today after 32 years with the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office. His career included 10 years as a road deputy — including time as a K9 officer — followed by five years as a sergeant and 17 years as an investigator.
Over the years, Smith became known for handling some of the county’s most complicated burglary and financial crime investigations. His determination helped hold high-level suspects accountable and brought justice and closure to hundreds of victims.
The department credited his tenacity and dedication as key to solving cases that otherwise might have gone cold.
“Join us in congratulating Investigator Doug Smith on his retirement,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a post. “We thank him for his 32 years of service to OCSO and the citizens of Ontario County.”
