Jury convicts sex offender in child abuse case

A Newark man with a prior sex offense conviction was found guilty this week of repeatedly abusing a young, developmentally disabled child in Ontario County.

A jury convicted 36-year-old Daniel Croll on August 20 of course of sexual conduct against a child in the second degree. The charges stemmed from a 2023 investigation that uncovered abuse spanning five years, starting when the child was under 11 years old.

Croll was taken into custody immediately after the verdict. He is scheduled to be sentenced October 16 in Ontario County Supreme Court before Judge Victoria Argento.

Croll is already a registered sex offender due to a 2021 conviction in Monroe County for attempted criminal sexual act. In that case, he sexually abused a person with diminished mental capacity at a children’s residential center.

Assistant District Attorneys Victoria Porter and Steven Farnholz led the prosecution.

“This child’s fight was harder than most,” Porter said. “Her resilience is truly inspiring.”

Farnholz added, “Our community is safer with Croll behind bars.”

Prosecutors plan to seek the maximum sentence allowed by law.
