Loose cattle located and returned in Jefferson County

Three calves that had been wandering loose near Interstate 81 in Jefferson County have been safely returned to their owner, according to New York State Police.

Troopers say the animals were found on Friday along Hax Road in La Fargeville, roughly four miles from their original pasture on Dano Road. All three calves or steers were secured without incident.

State officials have since removed roadside warning signs that were placed on I-81 while the animals were unaccounted for. Police say the cattle no longer pose a danger to drivers.

The animals were first reported on August 1, when two brown bull calves were spotted near the highway between La Fargeville and Orleans. Despite having ID tags, authorities initially struggled to locate the owner and asked the public for help.

The situation has now been resolved, and the investigation is closed.
