Wayne County residents invited to review updated flood maps

FEMA is calling on Wayne County residents to weigh in on newly proposed flood maps that could impact future insurance requirements and property risks.

A 90-day public comment and appeal period begins August 27. Locals are encouraged to review the updated Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) and submit appeals if they believe the data used is technically or scientifically inaccurate.

The maps were created with input from local, state, and federal officials. Property owners can submit corrections — such as misspelled road names or boundary errors — even if those details don’t impact flood risk zones.

Appeals must include supporting technical data, like hydrologic or hydraulic studies. Comments and appeals should be submitted through the local floodplain administrator.

Finalized maps are expected to take effect in late 2026, after all appeals are resolved.
