DEC opens Jefferson, St. Lawrence WMAs for 16-day public access

For just over two weeks this month, outdoor enthusiasts will have rare access to several usually restricted wildlife areas in Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties.

The DEC says the annual open house runs August 16–31, giving visitors a chance to explore Perch River, Upper and Lower Lakes, and Wilson Hill Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs).

Special rules for each area

Perch River WMA in Jefferson County spans nearly 8,000 acres and will be open daily from sunrise to sunset, except Perch Lake, which opens at noon. Fishing is allowed there, but motorized boats are not permitted.

Upper and Lower Lakes WMA in St. Lawrence County — the region’s largest at 8,770 acres — will be open from sunrise to sunset, including its posted refuge and wetland restricted areas.

Wilson Hill WMA near Massena covers about 4,000 acres along the St. Lawrence River. Visitors can explore its marshes and meadows, but fishing is prohibited in Nichols Pool.

Purpose of the open house

These refuge and wetland areas are normally closed most of the year to give waterfowl and other species space to breed and raise young without human disturbance.

The DEC warns that habitat and wildlife management projects may be underway during the open period. Visitors should avoid machinery and obey all posted signs.
