Young hunters will get a chance to test their skills this fall at the Montezuma Wetlands Complex.
The Montezuma Audubon Center in Savannah will host the 18th annual Robert F. DeRoo Memorial Youth Waterfowl and Pheasant Hunts, offering guided trips for participants and their mentors. The waterfowl hunt is set for Sept. 27, and the pheasant hunt will follow on Oct. 11.
Before heading into the field, youth ages 12 to 15 can take part in a Waterfowl Hunter Education Course on Sept. 20 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the center. The course is required for anyone hunting waterfowl at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge.
That same evening at 5 p.m., all hunters and mentors must attend a safety meeting and dinner at the center.
The program is free, but space is limited. Registration is required at audubon.org/montezuma/explore/programs-montezuma-audubon-center.
The event is coordinated by the Montezuma Audubon Center, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Wayne County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs, Ducks Unlimited, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, with support from several sponsors.
