Thompson Health honors technician with first BEE Award

A Geneva resident has been recognized as the first-ever recipient of Thompson Health’s BEE Award, created to celebrate exceptional care by non-licensed staff members.

Patient Care Technician Carly McCarthy, who joined UR Medicine Thompson Health in March, was selected for her attentiveness and empathy on the 3 East unit at Thompson Hospital.

“She is attentive to the needs of her patients and her fellow staff members,” wrote the nominating nurse. “On countless occasions I have asked her to complete a task and she would inform me that it was already done or she quickly made herself available to complete it. Carly is extremely compassionate and empathetic towards her patients, taking the extra time to make them feel seen, heard and loved.”

The BEE Award—short for Being Exceptional Every Day—was developed by Thompson associates to recognize non-licensed team members such as patient care technicians and medical office assistants. It serves as a counterpart to the hospital’s quarterly DAISY Award for licensed nurses.

“Bees pollinate daisies, and nursing would be lost without the work our amazing patient care technicians and medical office assistants do every day,” said Hazel Robertshaw, Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer. “They play a fundamental role in patient care.”

McCarthy received a BEE trophy and bouquets of flowers as part of the award. The hospital will present BEE Awards quarterly, and all nominees will receive recognition and a BEE pin. Nominations may be submitted by patients, their families, or staff at www.ThompsonHealth.com/BEE.
