Yankees release starting pitcher Marcus Stroman

The New York Yankees released veteran right-hander Marcus Stroman on Friday, ending a disappointing tenure.

Stroman signed a two-year, $37 million deal before the 2024 season, but the club will absorb the remainder of his $18 million salary after designating him for release. His $18 million option for 2026 will not vest, as he finished with just 39 innings pitched.

Stroman went 3-2 with a 6.23 ERA across nine starts this season, missing more than two months with a knee injury before returning in late June. His final appearance came on Thursday, when he allowed four runs over five innings against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The decision clears space in New York’s rotation for Luis Gil, who will return from the injured list Sunday to face the Miami Marlins. Gil joins Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, rookie Cam Schlittler, and Will Warren, leaving no room for Stroman.

With three relievers added at the deadline, shifting Stroman to the bullpen wasn’t considered an option, particularly after he dismissed the idea of a relief role in spring training.

Stroman is expected to get picked up by another club in the coming days.
