Mets swept by Padres as offense goes quiet again (highlights)

The New York Mets closed out a six-game West Coast trip with a 5-0 loss to the San Diego Padres on Wednesday afternoon at Petco Park, getting swept in the three-game series.

Clay Holmes battled command issues and defensive miscues throughout his 3.2-inning outing. He allowed four runs, only two earned, on eight hits, two walks, and two hit batters. A costly throwing error by Francisco Lindor led to a two-run home run in the third, and Holmes was lifted in the fourth after another scoring threat. The bullpen held the line from there, with Reed Garrett, Ryne Stanek, Brooks Raley, and Rico Garcia combining for 4.1 innings of one-run ball.

But the Mets’ offense never got going. With Juan Soto sidelined due to a foot contusion, New York couldn’t solve Yu Darvish, who tossed seven scoreless innings and struck out seven. The Mets collected just three hits, one each from Mark Vientos, Ronny Mauricio, and Brandon Nimmo. They also failed to draw a walk while striking out nine times.

Francisco Alvarez left the game early after taking a foul ball off his helmet, but passed concussion protocols.
