Auburn man sentenced to 8 years for felony assault

An Auburn man will serve eight years in state prison for a violent assault involving a separate act of attempted arson, Cayuga County prosecutors announced Thursday.

Mathew Mosher, 51, was sentenced in Cayuga County Court for his conviction on Attempted Assault in the First Degree, a Class C violent felony. He was also sentenced to an additional 2 to 4 years in prison for Aggravated Family Offense, a Class E felony involving a different victim. The sentences will run concurrently.

According to District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci, Mosher’s conviction stems from an incident in which he poured nail polish remover on the victim and attempted to ignite it using a lighter. The victim suffered burns on her leg as a result.

Mosher pleaded guilty to both charges as part of a deal with the court, receiving an eight-year sentence with five years of post-release supervision. Prosecutors had sought a longer term for the assault charge.

The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Courtney Venditte.
