Protesters demand Israeli flag be taken down

Peace groups gathered outside the Broome County Jail to protest the Israeli flag displayed at the Public Safety Facility, according to WIVT. The flag was raised by Sheriff Fred Akshar after the October 2023 Hamas attacks, but critics say it now symbolizes support for violence in Gaza.

Demonstrators, including members of Binghamton Solidarity for Palestine, argue the flag politicizes law enforcement and alienates Palestinian and Muslim residents seeking services. Activists are collecting petition signatures to pressure county leaders into ordering its removal.

Sheriff Akshar defended the display, stating it represents a stand against hate amid rising antisemitism locally. The controversy reflects broader tensions over the U.S. response to the ongoing Gaza conflict.
