A newly hired detention officer in North Carolina died just two hours into their first day on the job, according to WECT. The recruit collapsed after a sudden medical emergency shortly after being sworn in with eight others at the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office.
Despite immediate lifesaving efforts and transport to Columbus Regional Medical Center, the officer was pronounced dead. The department is withholding their identity to respect the family’s privacy.
Sheriff Bill Rogers described the loss as deeply painful, noting that though the officer’s time with the department was brief, they will always be remembered as part of the law enforcement family.
