New York sheriffs are pushing back against proposals to sharply limit police vehicle pursuits, saying the problem lies with criminals, not officers, according to the Finger Lakes Times.
State Attorney General Letitia James is calling for statewide restrictions on high-speed chases, citing a rise in crashes and fatalities. Her proposal would ban pursuits except in cases involving violent felonies or imminent danger. Sheriffs across Ontario, Seneca, Wayne, and Yates counties argue they already use discretion and believe stricter penalties—not more limits—would deter fleeing suspects.
Wayne County’s sheriff criticized the reforms as undermining police authority, while Ontario County noted its policy was updated years ago in response to bail reform. Yates County emphasized the use of technology to avoid unnecessary chases, while maintaining that officer discretion remains critical.
