New York’s legislature has passed a bill to ban the sale of Kratom to anyone under 21, citing safety concerns about the unregulated herbal substance. The move follows the death of a 27-year-old man who reportedly became addicted to Kratom and died from its side effects.
Kratom, which mimics both opioid and stimulant effects, is sold in drinks and flavored candies without FDA oversight. The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman John McDonald, also calls for the state health department to study the substance further.
Supporters say the legislation is a crucial step to protect youth while broader regulatory discussions continue. The bill awaits Governor Hochul’s signature.
