A man has been charged in connection with a 2022 arson incident at Byrne Dairy in Auburn after police identified him through surveillance footage and issued a warrant for his arrest.
Jonathan Heffle was taken into custody on July 13 by the Orchard Park Police Department in Avon, New York, nearly three years after the fire occurred. He was then transferred to the Auburn Police Department and later arraigned at Cayuga County Jail.
The original incident happened on August 29, 2022, around 4:35 a.m., when officers responded to a report of a dumpster fire at Byrne Dairy, located at 70 Arterial East. According to the Auburn Police Department, an employee called 911 after receiving a tip that the dumpster was on fire.
Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators showed the suspect being ejected from the store shortly before the fire started. Officers identified Heffle as the suspect and secured a warrant after completing their investigation.
Heffle was charged with criminal mischief in the third degree, a Class E felony, and arson in the fifth degree, a Class A misdemeanor. He was released from custody after his arraignment.
