DEC investigates fish die-off at Skaneateles Lake

After reports of dead fish along the Skaneateles Lake shoreline, the Department of Environmental Conservation is investigating possible causes. Officials tell WSYR-TV the deaths appear to be natural, likely driven by recent extreme water temperature swings stressing spawning fish.

Experts point to a hot summer following a cooler spring as a trigger for the die-off. While some suspect disease, the DEC hasn’t confirmed that theory. Locals are urged to report distressed fish, especially those still alive, to aid the investigation.

Residents who find a struggling fish should check for red or pink gills and contact the DEC immediately. Investigators say early reporting and physical evidence are key to identifying the root cause.
